Becoming a Licensed Aesthetician can be an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling career! The decision to invest in yourself by starting a new journey in the growing skincare industry is an important one. Below, we outline what it takes to be a successful practitioner and highlight some important elements to consider as you think about pursuing a career in Aesthetics.

  • Aestheticians have a calm, professional demeanor
    • Aesthetics is a customer service-based industry. Whether you work for someone else or for yourself, this requires a level of professionalism as you interact with clients. Being a team player is also important; you will likely have coworkers or maybe employees of your own down the road!

    • Unlike some other areas of the beauty industry that are high energy or noisy, the spa environment is peaceful and quiet; clients want to feel relaxed. Good aestheticians match this energy.

  • Aestheticians are hands-on
    • The nature of the job requires aestheticians to regularly be in other people’s personal and energetic space, and vice versa. Physical contact with people is necessary in this line of work; a good aesthetician has a soothing, natural touch and is comfortable being in close proximity to others.

  • Aestheticians need to have physical stamina
    • Aestheticians are on their feet a lot! They often work long hours with back-to-back clients. Certain treatments can also be physically draining and many treatments require fine motor skills and detail work.

  • Aestheticians are life-long learners
    • Training to become an Aesthetician requires a lot of memorization, especially in some sciences. Once in the field, Aestheticians are often working evenings and weekends to meet the needs and demands of clients.

    • Aesthetics is an ever-evolving industry; successful estheticians stay up on changes, and trends, and pursue ongoing education. Being intrinsically motivated to continually learn and better themselves is a valuable quality. For those who are self-employed and set their own hours, while the flexibility is refreshing, not having accountability from a higher-up means needing to be more disciplined on their own.

    • Good Aestheticians are also willing to learn new things from their employers and coworkers, as well as learn from their own mistakes.

  • Aestheticians do a lot of multitasking
    • Being a skilled Aesthetician means paying attention to detail at all times! Treatments require multiple steps, often while engaging with and educating the client, upselling products and services, and simultaneously keeping workspaces clean and organized. Good time management is also paramount.

  •  Being in the field of Aesthetics requires patience
    • It takes time to grow! There is still a lot of work to be done after obtaining a license. Building a client base can be a slow process that requires consistency and intentionality. Obtaining the dream job doesn’t usually happen right out of the gate. Good aestheticians know that they will need to start from the bottom and work their way toward their big-picture goals in the industry. They also expect to make mistakes as they gain experience and are patient with themselves through the process.

In conclusion, embarking on a career as a Licensed Aesthetician can be a fulfilling journey for those passionate about skincare and beauty. By investing in education, obtaining a license, honing communication skills, staying updated on industry trends, and upholding professionalism, individuals can build a successful career in this dynamic and rewarding field. If you are considering pursuing a career in aesthetics, remember that dedication, continuous learning, and a genuine desire to help others look and feel their best are key to achieving success in this exciting industry.
