SWINA Career Services tips to start your own esthetics business

Have you ever imagined owning your own spa, skincare studio, or aesthetics practice? For many aspiring and graduating Aestheticians and Laser Technicians, the dream goes far beyond working for someone else—it’s about creating a business that reflects your passion, vision, and values. Starting your own aesthetician business may feel overwhelming at first, however, with the right steps, preparation, and mindset, you can transform your skills into a thriving career.

At Southwest Institute of Natural Aesthetics (SWINA), we know our students are creative entrepreneurs at heart. You’re not just learning how to perform facials, peels, or laser treatments—you’re learning how to change lives through the art and science of skin health. Building your own business is a powerful way to amplify that impact. To help you get started, here are 10 essential steps to launching your aesthetic dream:

1. Create a Business Plan

Outline your goals, target market, services, pricing, and marketing strategy. A clear plan helps you stay focused and can attract investors if needed. A great resource is The One Page Business Plan for the Creative Entrepreneur by Jim Horan.

2. Choose a Business Name

Pick a name that reflects your brand and is memorable. Check trademarks and domain name availability before finalizing. Research is key—make sure your perfect name hasn’t already been claimed.

3. Register Your Business Structure

Forming an LLC (Limited Liability Company) can protect your personal assets. You’ll need to file Articles of Organization in your state and pay fees. A helpful guide is LLC Beginner's Guide [All-in-1] by Carolyn Ava Martin. If you’d prefer guidance, SWINA’s Career Services can connect you with a Success Coach to walk you through the process.

4. Obtain an EIN

Apply for your Employer Identification Number (EIN) online for free through the IRS. This is essential for taxes and business banking.

5. Get Licensed and Insured

Check your state’s licensing requirements and make sure your credentials are up to date. Liability insurance is also important to protect you and your clients.

6. Set Up a Business Bank Account

Keep business and personal finances separate—it makes bookkeeping and tax filing much easier. Opening an account in your new business name is an exciting milestone!

7. Choose a Location

Decide if you’ll work from home, rent a commercial space, or offer mobile services. Each option has unique costs and benefits.

8. Invest in Equipment, Products, and Supplies

Choose high-quality, professional-grade products and tools. Research brand requirements carefully—some companies require large upfront orders, while others are more flexible.

9. Develop Your Brand and Marketing Strategy

Your brand is more than a logo—it’s the story you tell and the experience you create. Build your online presence through a website, social media, and reviews. Consider offering referral programs or promotions to attract your first clients.

10. Stay Positive and Persistent

Success doesn’t happen overnight. Like skin care, your business requires consistent effort over time to see results. Think of your entrepreneurial journey as a series of treatments—each step builds toward transformation.
