![How to Talk About Your SWINA Education in a Job Interview](https://blog.swina.swiha.edu/hs-fs/hubfs/How%20to%20Talk%20About%20Your%20SWINA%20Education%20in%20a%20Job%20Interview.jpg?width=1200&height=628&name=How%20to%20Talk%20About%20Your%20SWINA%20Education%20in%20a%20Job%20Interview.jpg)

You’ve put in the hours. You’ve learned skincare techniques, practiced treatments, worked with clients, and developed the professional skills needed to begin your career in aesthetics.

Now you’re sitting across from a potential employer, and they ask:

**“Tell me about your experience.”**

For a recent graduate, this question can feel challenging. You may be thinking, *I’m a new graduate. What experience do I really have?*

The answer is: **more than you may realize.**

Your education at Southwest Institute of Natural Aesthetics (SWINA) gave you more than a diploma. It gave you hands-on training, client experience, technical knowledge, and professional skills that you can bring into an interview and, eventually, the workplace.

The key is learning how to talk about that experience in a way that helps an employer understand what you can contribute.

## **Don't Just Say You Went to Aesthetics School**

One of the biggest mistakes a new graduate can make in an interview is underselling their education.

Instead of simply saying:

“I just graduated from aesthetics school.”

Think about what that statement actually represents.

You completed training. You practiced techniques. You worked with clients. You learned how to communicate professionally. You developed an understanding of skincare and treatments. You learned how to work within professional standards and adapt to different client needs.

Those are skills worth talking about.

## **1. Talk About Your Hands-On Experience**

Employers want to know what you can actually do—not just what you've studied.

When discussing your SWINA education, explain the hands-on experience you gained through your training.

You might say:

“My training at SWINA included hands-on experience performing treatments and working with clients in a supervised student environment. That experience helped me become more comfortable with client communication, treatment protocols, and creating a professional client experience.”

Be specific whenever possible.

Rather than listing every technique you've learned, focus on the skills that are relevant to the position you're applying for.

**Think:** What does this employer need, and where did my education prepare me for that?

## **2. Highlight Your Client Communication Skills**

Being a successful aesthetician isn't only about performing treatments.

It's also about making clients feel comfortable, listening to their concerns, communicating clearly, and creating an experience that encourages them to trust you.

Your education can give you examples of how you've developed those skills.

You could explain:

“My training taught me the importance of listening to the client and understanding their goals before recommending a treatment. I've learned how important communication is in creating trust and making sure the client feels comfortable throughout their experience.”

This demonstrates that you understand aesthetics as both a **technical profession and a client-centered profession.**

## **3. Talk About Consultation Skills**

Consultations are an important part of the client experience.

During an interview, don't simply say that you learned how to perform treatments. Explain that you learned how to approach a client's needs thoughtfully.

For example:

“Through my training, I've learned how to approach a consultation by listening to the client's concerns, asking appropriate questions, assessing their needs, and communicating realistic treatment expectations.”

This type of answer shows an employer that you're thinking beyond the treatment itself.

You're thinking about the **entire client journey.**

## **4. Connect Your Treatment Knowledge to the Position**

Your SWINA education may have introduced you to a variety of skincare treatments, products, modalities, and professional practices.

When discussing your education, connect that knowledge to the job you're applying for.

For example, if you're interviewing at a spa, you might emphasize your knowledge of:

- Facial treatments
- Skin analysis
- Product recommendations
- Client care
- Exfoliation
- Waxing
- Body treatments
- Relaxation and wellness-focused services

If you're pursuing a position involving aesthetics and laser technology, you can highlight the relevant training you've received and your understanding of professional treatment protocols.

The goal isn't to overwhelm the interviewer with a list of everything you've learned.

Instead, **show them how your education relates to the position.**

## **5. Don't Forget Professionalism**

Professionalism is one of the most valuable things you can bring into any workplace.

Your education helped prepare you to work with clients, classmates, instructors, and future colleagues in a professional environment.

Think about examples that demonstrate:

- Dependability
- Time management
- Communication
- Organization
- Teamwork
- Maintaining professional boundaries
- Following protocols
- Creating a positive client experience

For example:

“My experience at SWINA taught me how important professionalism is in a client-facing environment. I learned to communicate clearly, stay organized, follow established protocols, and maintain a professional attitude even when situations were challenging.”

That answer tells an employer much more than simply saying, “I'm a hard worker.”

## **6. Show That You're Adaptable and Ready to Learn**

As a new graduate, you aren't expected to know everything.

In fact, employers may appreciate candidates who demonstrate that they are eager to continue learning.

Your SWINA education gave you a foundation. Your professional career is where you'll continue building on it.

You might say:

“My education gave me a strong foundation, and I'm excited to continue learning as I enter the industry. I'm comfortable receiving feedback, learning new techniques, and adapting to the needs of the workplace.”

This communicates confidence without pretending that you already know everything.

**Being teachable is a strength.**

## **Turn “I'm a Recent Graduate” Into a Strength**

Being a recent graduate doesn't mean you have nothing to offer an employer.

It means you're entering the industry with current education, enthusiasm, hands-on training, and a willingness to learn.

Instead of apologizing for being new, confidently explain what you've already accomplished.

Try replacing:

**“I don't have much experience yet.”**

With:

**“I'm a recent SWINA graduate with hands-on training and experience working with clients in a supervised environment, and I'm excited to continue developing my skills in a professional setting.”**

That small shift can make a big difference in how you present yourself.

## **Prepare Your Own “SWINA Story”**

Before your next interview, take some time to think about your education and identify **three to five experiences you can confidently talk about.**

Consider:

- What treatments are you most comfortable performing?
- What did you learn from working with clients?
- What was a challenging situation you successfully navigated?
- What skills did you develop during your training?
- What are you most proud of accomplishing at SWINA?
- What type of aesthetics environment are you hoping to work in?
- What are you excited to continue learning?

Having these examples ready can make it much easier to answer interview questions naturally.

You don't need to memorize a script.

You simply want to be prepared to tell your story.

## **Your SWINA Education Is Part of Your Professional Story**

When you walk into an interview, remember that your education is part of what makes you qualified to be there.

Your SWINA experience helped you develop technical knowledge, hands-on skills, client communication, consultation skills, professionalism, and a foundation for continued growth.

Now it's your job to communicate that value.

**Don't minimize what you've learned. Own it.**

Your first job interview is an opportunity to show an employer not only what you've learned, but also who you are becoming as a professional.

### **Need Help Preparing for Your Next Interview?**

If you're a current SWINA student or recent graduate preparing to enter the aesthetics and laser industry, **Career Services is here to help.**

Career Services can support you with interview preparation, resume guidance, career planning, job-search strategies, and professional development.

Before your next interview, take advantage of the resources available to you and practice communicating the value of your SWINA education with confidence.

**You worked hard to build your skills. Now it's time to confidently share what you bring to the industry.**
